Get to Know Stunt Veteran Tim Wong

Having worked his way up through some of the industry’s biggest projects, Tim shares his core philosophy, career insights and a look back at his journey.

How did you get into stunts?

Largely right time, right place really. Very blessed to have luck on my side. A friend of mine, who was also trying to break into stunts. Heard a stunt coordinator was putting together a new stunt team for The Lord of the Rings films and said I should try out.

So I went along to the week long audition in Auckland, which was run by legendary English swordmaster Bob Anderson and did well enough to get selected.The rest they say is history. I am really fortunate that my first stunt job lasted nearly 4 years on such a popular film franchise.

What was your first stunt?

Rolling down a steep hill 27 times with 3 others stunt guys, as the Frodo stunt double.

What's been the biggest challenge in your career so far?

Navigating a balance between family and being a father, with challenging work commitments.

What stunts do you specialize in?

Fights and wire work would be what I a most comfortable with. But films like Furiosa also teaches you a lot about vehicle work.

Which project or accomplishment are you most proud of so far in your career? And why?

As a stunt performer, I still can't go past The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It was commercially very successful and also loved by audiences worldwide.

We had a really close stunt knit team that supported each other through the gruelling, long shoot.

The Battle of Helm's Deep in the second film, is still the most challenging thing I have ever done in film. It was almost 3 months of night shoots, under rain towers. As a stunt coordinator, it would be Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Such a great experience working on such an iconic film franchise. Our full time team was almost 60 people so it took a lot of management. I was lucky to be working under Guy Norris the action unit director and George Miller the director. Not many films are both equally challenging and rewarding.

What are you currently working on?

I am back in middle earth and working on The Lord of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum with fellow Hitz members Augie Davis, Steve Davis and Liam Gherlenda.

Do you have a quote or phrase that sums up your personal philosophy, approach or style?

Stay hungry and stay humble is probably the one I say to myself the most.
